News from the doctor following Carson's four-year appointment: he needs to gain more weight. Specifically, he wants him to eat more fat.

Question: What high-fat foods do you feed a kid who can't have dairy?? He's going to get tired of eggs and peanut butter!

Stop buying lean hamburger? At least that'll be cheaper! :-) ??

Stop buying the lean hamburger? It's cheaper, I think. Or maybe almonds...I think they're high in fat.

He needs to be all dairy free? Not only lactose free?

How about sausages? Finnish pullabread (made with water, not milk? cookies? french fries and more french fries =) + anything deep fried...

We have an appointment for Sofia tomorrow, concerning the same thing - not gaining enough weight. But she does LOVE mac&cheese and ice cream though =) How come I never have a problem of finding fattening things to eat??? =)

All dairy, not just lactose. I make bread with soy milk - haven't made pulla yet though:) He eats a sausage patty almost every day, but the pre-cooked ones I buy are "low-fat". (Although they're still higher than, say, applesauce I suppose!) Most of the fried stuff around here has milk in the batter/breading too... chicken strips, onion rings, even a lot of fries. Seriously, this is harder than I anticipated!

oh, we went through this with Sean when he had his milk allergy (thankfully he grew out of it!), but we had an appt with a nutritionist, because I was at a loss, especially at that early age, and our insurance covered it, you may ask your ped. about that, because they can give you all kinds of ideas... but what worked for us, fats that are not dairy... olive oil: mix in mashed potatos, on rice, pasta, oatmeal, etc... avacados (if he'll eat them!) straight, mashed mixed with rice, etc., nuts-if he can have those. Also margarine, in and on everything, Nucoa I think is the only brand that is totally milk free. You can get a rice protein powder as well, that's not fat, but you can put some in pancakes and other baked goods to up the nutrition and protein (and thus weight) without adding any dairy. I found a lot of useful stuff on some websites for kosher baking, you can google kosher or pareve and they have some helpful info on reading labels and kosher symbols that are on products that make it easy to spot. Give me a call or send me an email if you want to talk more or just need support! I remember going to the grocery right away after being told no dairy (for me and Sean) and comming home 2 hrs later with 3 things and pretty much in tears, who knew that there is only one brand of taco seasoning that doesn't have dairy! It is in EVERYTHING! Good luck! ~April

Oh, ok. That is more tricky then....but, we might be there too sooner than we think....went to see the nurse today and got doctor's appointment for Sofia for next Monday. Need to be tested for milk and domestic grain. She might be gluten intolerant or just intolerant for all grain or milk, or dairy or.......we'll see.

Funny that they but dairy on french fries and stuff. Here they are pure potatoes and oil. And Sofia loves them.

Remember that we can totally relate since when Rami first got his diagnosis....there was absolutely nothing gluten free in the stores.....

Thanks for your ideas April – avocados are a great thought! He loved those in Mexico. I hadn’t thought of mixing olive oil in things either... that’s easy enough. We looked at the soy and rice powders, but yikes… they’re spendy. We may still have to do that though.
I’m actually OK with the “dairy free” thing, after a brief (two week?) stage of freaking out last fall when we first found out we needed to cut it out of his diet. I spent about $100 at the natural foods store on “dairy free” things before I discovered there were so many things in the grocery stores that were fine – I just ended to start reading labels on everything. (Funny things like Ritz crackers and Club crackers that I think of as “butter” crackers, are actually fine… but I digress...) I also got a book that goes through all the different substitutes and how to cook with them, so most of my recipes still work with dairy substitutes. I can even whip up a mean alfredo sauce:) Carson couldn’t do milk when he was a baby, but we thought he had grown out of it as well. Turns out it’s not uncommon for other systems to have trouble with foods even if the digestive issues go away. Who knew? Hopefully that won’t be the case for Sean though!

Riikka – let us know what you find out about Sofia! Either way we’ll be ready for you guys when you’re here this summer... I’m getting good at the special diet thing. I’ve thought a lot about you doing this with Rami – I think gluten would be so much harder!

What is the book for substitutes? I'd love to have something like that, as I try to do as much dairy free for myself as I can, but haven't been very good about it lately...

The book is listed right at the top. It's half informational and half recipes... but great for wading through the dairy-free world! The author's story is similar to Carson's... he's allergic to dairy... oh, he grew out of it... oh, maybe not so much.
